The key question

Aurora PostgreSQL can be a modernisation target, but suitability depends on whether the required behaviour is available on the selected engine version and within the intended operating model.

What to inventory

  • Inventory Oracle-specific features and PL/SQL usage.
  • List required extensions and administrative tasks.
  • Capture read/write workload and availability requirements.

Design the target deliberately

Separate engine compatibility from managed-service capabilities. A list of supported extensions does not tell you whether the application recovers correctly from a broken connection. Validate functions, privileges, parameters and connection management on a representative target environment.

A concrete validation step

Choose an end-to-end business flow for the pilot rather than an isolated table. A successful combination of writes, reads, background work and error handling provides much stronger evidence for the target design.

Evidence required before sign-off

  • Port and compare critical SQL and PL/SQL use cases.
  • Test reconnect and restart behaviour in the actual client.
  • Include backup, restore and monitoring in acceptance.
  • Align version and upgrade planning with required extensions.
