The key question
The question “what is the alternative?” is incomplete without the job to be done. Is the goal export, conversion, inventory assessment or deciding what to pilot? A tool comparison should not mix those objectives.
What to inventory
- Define the expected outputs and object types in scope.
- Check privileges, operating environment and output formats.
- Use a representative, approved source set for comparison.
Design the target deliberately
Ora2Pg supports Oracle-to-PostgreSQL migration tasks including export and conversion and also provides assessment capabilities. GCON-DB focuses on technical analysis, senior engineering judgement, proof of concept and migration implementation. Neither implies blanket superiority; a combination can be effective when review and acceptance responsibilities are explicit.
A concrete validation step
A focused comparison can cover one package, one view, one job and one data import. For each case, record generated output, required rework and the business test evidence.
Evidence required before sign-off
- Compare outputs using the same business test cases.
- Make unsupported and manually handled areas visible.
- Validate converted objects for behaviour, not only installability.
- Assess ongoing maintenance and usability for the project team.
